Technology in worship. This modernization of the age old forms has great advantages for the Kingdom of God. At Sherman, we make use of microphones, mix boards, dvd players and big screens. We also make use of AC, furnaces, and electric lights. I know these last three sound silly but they are actually recent additions to worship when you look at the expanse of history. Technology is great and can be used in the right hands to create an opportunity to bring the message of God to shut-ins, hospital patients and over the road truck drivers. But bringing the message of worship or the music of worship to people is not the same as bringing people to the place worship. In a world of video conferences and radio ministries, the question needs to be asked, what will be the true definition of corporate worship. I make no arguments about personal or private devotions. These can happen anywhere and anytime. I take no stand on teaching and biblical studies. These can happen in many different ways. But when it comes to corporate worship, keeping the Sabbath kind of worship, I think technology carries a unique danger. Technology today allows us to engage all the images and sounds of worship without actually traveling to God’s house. As I have said, for those physically unable to attend, this can be good; however, those who are healthy are tempted to increase their intake of techno worship and decrease their true worship in the midst of God’s house and in the midst of God’s people. I have met many who say they go to church with a viewing of a TV ministry. I have met many who consider their Sunday complete with a simple radio sermon. As the world changes, many now may consider worshipping online, worshipping through pod casts or worshipping through simulcast as being in God’s house. In Scripture, we find God first gives the Jews a tabernacle as a place to gather and worship. We find that God solidified this idea with the gift of the temple at Jerusalem. The early church worshiped in “Spirit and in Truth” but they still met together regularly to worship together in homes or in the temple. The church has always been a gathering. It is not simply a bull horn for the message of God, it is gathering of the people of God. Somehow, coming into the presence of so many is part of God’s plan to bring us into the presence of the One. As the psalmist says, “Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you.” (Psalm 84:4)
